RBG and the Fight Against Cancer

I read articles and post about RBG’s death. Hundreds of each. But very few addressed her humanity. The majority of them were about Republican and Democratic reaction and the political consequence of her passing.

What was left out was this strong woman who died of pancreatic cancer. She died due to this very painful and deadly cancer. And after her passing, her loved ones grieved the loss of a mother, grandmother and friend.

Not only did she pass away from pancreatic cancer but throughout her life dealt with cancer related to her colon, liver and lungs.

The fight against cancer is very personal. My father spent his life as an oncologist treating cancer patients. The love and kindness that he showed on a daily basis to his patients sticks with me even 7 years after his passing. He died making sure that individuals had a fighting chance for a better tomorrow. That level of service was something that motivated me and motivates me to this day. His sacrifice to give his family a better life and his passion and care for his patients, pushes me to give it my all.

My youngest uncle, my father’s brother, died of cancer 14 years ago. To see this lively and healthy man slowly lose all energy and life was a huge shock to me as a child. I vividly remember him as a healthy man and to see him succumb to his cancer was beyond heartbreaking.

My only request is that we do all we can as a society to find a cure for this horrible disease. I hope for leaders who put the fight against cancer at the top of their list, so not one more family has to suffer from this horrific disease.

Below are some great cancer support organizations:
